Charles Alexander Dilling was born in North Carolina to Freno and Nancy McNair Dilling. He was an active and popular businessman in the Kings Mountain area. He was the secretary and treasurer of the Dilling Cotton Mill for many years. He was a member of the city council for many years as well. He was serving his second term as mayor when he passed away.

Charles A. Dilling was married to his wife, Annie Garrett Dilling, for 21 years before he passed away. The couple had four children.

Charles Alexander Dilling passed away at the age of 45, from a cerebral hemorrhage.
